Andhra Pradesh
The role of the Civil Supplies wing of the Government is reduced to that of a silent spectator even as traders resort to large-scale hoarding of essential commodities, subjecting the common man to untold hardships. An occurrence like the truckers’ strike comes in handy for these ‘syndicates’ to create an artificial scarcity in the market and fleece the hapless buyers left with little choice. Prices of rice, cereals, vegetables and diesel have constantly been rising adding to the financial woes of the middle and lower classes of society. One does not really know where this harmful trend will take us and where exactly does the solution of the problems lie. Mohd. Nazeeruddin Eluru Congress needs to tread cautiouslyThe Congress-led United Progressive Alliance Government at the Centre is taking a calculated risk by letting its long-term political ally, the Left parties, go and accepting the support of Mulayam Singh’s Samajwadi Party to go ahead with the nuclear deal. Relying on a party like the ‘rickety’ SP, some of whose MPs have already openly declared that they would vote against the trust motion when put to vote in Parliament, tantamount to pushing oneself into a dicey situation. Since equations are changing fast and the Left parties have taken up intensive campaign to mobilize public support against the proposed nuclear deal, the Congress must really tread cautiously if it wants to see the deal converting into a reality. M. Balu Kumar Tenali Accident-prone roadThe road between Naidupet and Tirupati is bumpy and full of potholes. Deep valleys on either side flank the buses passing through the route. At times, the speed-breakers post high risk to the vehicles. The authorities concerned must look into the problem and initiate steps for widening of the road and its conversion into a four-lane route. This is important because the route is ever busy with pilgrims going to Tirupati for the Lord’s darshan. K. Sujatha Nagaraja Rao Kavali Key to wellnessDefecation in open places poses a serious threat to public health. We claim to be making rapid strides in terms of achieving development in all fields but when it comes to hygiene, we lag far behind the expected lines. Absence of individual responsibility, which ought to be the order of the day, leads to such public menace. People must realise that clean surroundings will help one and all in keeping good health and good health is the key to leading a happy life. G. Venkatapathi Bapatla
