PUDUCHERRY: The Oulgaret Municipality has worked out an action plan to address the problem of stray dogs. Chairman of the Oulgaret Municipality N.S.J Jayabal told The Hindu that steps had been taken to construct a shelter in around 5000 square feet of land near the Mettupalayam Truck Terminal to house stray dogs. It would have provision to conduct Animal Birth Control programme for dogs, he said. A survey conducted by the Municipality revealed that there were around 11,000 stray dogs in Oulgaret, he said adding that they have decided to fill the post of Medical officer to conduct the ABC programme. Mr. Jayabal said they planned to make licence compulsory for dogs and those found roaming on the streets without licence would be kept in the shelter home. The Municipality also plans to impound cows and bullocks straying on roads. This follows complaints from people about the danger they posed to motorists, he said. It had been decided hire private contractors to impound stray cows and bullocks, he said. The owner of such impounded animals would have to pay a fine and reimburse the amount spent for the animal while it was in their custody, Mr Jayabal said. A tender would soon be floated to select the private player for the “Animal Rescue Operation,” he said. New bus shelterMr. Jayabal along with Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha) M. Ramadass inaugurated a bus shelter at Kalapet on Sunday. He said they had identified more than 20 locations in Oulgaret for constructing new bus shelters.
