NAMAKKAL: The famous Valvil Ori festival will be held at Kolli Hills on August 1 and 2. Kolli Hills was the ancient kingdom of the celebrated King Valvil Ori.

The festival will highlight the indigenous traditions, culture and values of tribal people living in the hills, Collector U. Sagayam said.

Discussing with the officials about the arrangements to be made for the festival at a meeting here on Saturday, the Collector said the administration would involve the folk artists living in the tribal hamlets in the hills for conducting cultural programmes. He instructed the officials to encourage all the people living in the tribal hamlets to participate in the events scheduled to be held as a part of the festival. The participation of the tribal youth and children should be ensured, he stressed. The Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation would operate 16 special buses during the festival. Stalls would be established through 18 departments to make people in the hills and the tourists aware of the government welfare programmes and achievements.

The State Highways officials were asked to carry out repairs on the ghat road and whitewash the parapet walls. A medical camp would be conducted through the health department. The tourist attractions in the hills would be spruced up to attract more visitors, he added. Senthamangalam MLA K. Ponnusamy, District Rural Development Agency project officer P. Renuga Devi and senior officials from various departments attended the meeting.
