Congress extends support to agitating clerks in M.P.

Demands include salary hike and recruitment of more clerks

70,000 State government employees went on indefinite strike from July 4

Renewed the strike after governement failed to fulfil its demands as it assured

Bhopal: In a major boost to the agitating 70,000 clerks of the State Government, Madhya Pradesh Karamchari Congress on Sunday extended its support to their indefinite strike which began on July 4.

11-point demand

“Karamchari Congress fully supports the strike by clerks. All the clerks belonging to the organisation would participate in the strike from tomorrow,” Virendra Khongal, President of the State Karamchari Congress told reporters.

Clerks in the State have gone on strike several times in support of their 11-point demand, but the Government did not pay any heed, he added.

“Last time they went to strike, but withdrew it following assurances by the Government that their demand would be redressed,” he said adding that even after long time gap it has not fulfilled the demands resulting in the latest strike.

President of the State Employees Federation, M. L. Mishra said that over 70,000 State Government employees have gone on indefinite strike from July 4 demanding salary hike and recruitment of more clerks in the wake of a large number of vacancies in different departments.

Shortage of staff

In the wake of government’s policy to cut down 30 per cent clerical staff, he said the remaining staff is over-burdened following retirements and posts lying vacant after death of employees. The government was cutting down vacancies instead of filling them, he added. --PTI
