Rise against N-deal: CPI(M)

Staff Correspondent

‘Pact not in country’s interest’

BELLARY: G.N. Nagaraj, member of the CPI (M) State secretariat, has said that the nuclear deal with the United States was detrimental to the interests of the country and wants people to strongly protest against the UPA Government’s decision to go ahead with it.

Addressing presspersons here on Sunday, Mr. Nagaraj criticised the Congress-led UPA Government for misleading the public on the deal. “It is a matter of grave concern that the UPA Government, which has now been reduced to a minority, did not follow the basic principles of democracy.

People should protest against the Government’s decision, as it would seriously affect the country’s interests,” he said.

Mr. Nagaraj said the haste being shown by the Government on the N-deal was mainly because of the pressure from the President of United States.

“The country will have to pay a heavy price for signing the nuke deal,” he warned.

He criticised the Union Government for its failure to initiate steps to check price rise, which had hit the people hard.

On nationalising mining, Mr. Nagaraj, while welcoming it, said that the State and Union government should immediately withdraw the leases given to the private sector and take steps to bring in a mining policy.

Jathas

He said that an action committee demanding nationalisation of mining, formed by the CPI, CPI (M) and DSS, among others, would take out jathas in Tumkur, Chitradurga and Bellary from July 25 to 27 to create awareness among the public on the disastrous effect of rapid and illegal mining.

U.R. Ananthamurthy, Jnanpith Award winner, and other prominent persons would participate in the jatha, he said.

Mr. Nagaraj expressed concern over the influence of the mining, education and real estate lobby controlling the BJP Government in the State, and said that it was not a healthy development in a democratic set-up.
