AISF agitation in Kottayam turns violent

Staff Reporter

KOTTAYAM: The police arrested eight persons in connection with an agitation by the All India Students Federation (AISF) against the conduct of entrance examination for nursing programmes by private managements, here on Sunday.

The police used force to disperse the agitators after they allegedly attempted to obstruct the conduct of the examination. AISF district president Praveen was injured in the police action and has been admitted to the Kottayam district hospital. Seven of the arrested AISF activists will be produced before the first Class Judicial Magistrate, Ettumanur, the police said.

The entrance test for nursing programmes offered by private nursing college managements affiliated to the Consortium of Nursing College Managements was held at five centres in the district. However, violence was reported only from the centre at CMS College Higher Secondary School.

Roy K. George, Controller of Examinations for the Consortium, said the tests were held at 16 centres in the State: two in Kozhikode, seven in Ernakulam and two in Kollam in addition to five in Kottayam.

He said 7,255 candidates had registered for the examination. Of the 61 private management nursing colleges, 31 managements admit candidates from the merit lit prepared on the basis of the entrance examinations conducted by the consortium.

According to Mr George, 85 per cent of the seats are filled from the merit list and 15 per cent has been reserved for NRIs.
