Bangalore: Three renowned Carnatic artistes, including D.K. Pattamal, were conferred with lifetime awards instituted by the Percussive Arts Centre on Sunday for their contribution to the field of Carnatic music. Two upcoming artistes were conferred with youth achievement awards.

These awards were given away during the valedictory of the four-day Thalavadyotsav 2008, an international percussive arts festival and music conference, organised by the centre at the Bangalore Gayana Samaja. The three musicians who were felicitated were Madurai T. Srinivasan and R. Sathyanarayana besides Ms. Pattamal, while two artistes — N. Vasudev and B.S. Arun Kumar — were conferred with Youth Achievement Awards.

The Palani Subramanya Pillai Memorial Centenary Award was given to D.K. Pattamal, who was conferred with the title “Laya Kala Nipuna.” Since Ms. Pattamal was unable to travel to Bangalore, the centre has decided to go to Chennai to present the award to her, said M.R. Doraiswamy Iyengar, president of the centre.

Mr. Srinivasan received the Palghat Mani Iyer Memorial Award and was conferred the title “Mridanga Kala Shiromani.” The Bangalore K. Venkataram Memorial Award and the title “Sangeetha Kalabhijna” was given to R. Sathyanarayana. Mr. Vasudev won the H. Puttachar Memorial Award and was conferred with the tile “Laya Kala Prathibha Mani,” while Mr. Arun Kumar won the PAC – CMANA Endowment Prize.

M.R. Doreswamy, MLC, urged various sangeetha sabhas in the city to organise events to propagate classical music and the rich cultural heritage of the State. Such events would provide a platform to upcoming, young artistes to showcase their talent. He maintained that such cultural activities were essential for a “healthy society.”

Manu Baligar, Director, Directorate of Kannada and Culture, gave away the prizes to the winners of the Amruthur Janaki Ammal Memorial Competition for percussions. Shreyas Shastry, Channa Keshav, B.J. Pradyumna were winners in the sub-junior category, while the merit prize in the junior category was presented to Vishnu Vardhana. In the senior category, the prizes were presented to B.S. Prashanth and S. Anirudha. Anirudha also won the G.S. Sriram Memorial Prize.
