Home science courses now for boys too

S. Sandeep Kumar

HYDERABAD: Now men can also look forward to admissions into the home science courses offered by Acharya N.G. Ranga Agricultural University as it is proposing to start two new colleges at Vijayawada and Kadapa in the State.

Home science courses, particularly interior design, fashion technology and dietician course always offer good prospects for women. In the recent years, even men have prospered in these fields.

Excepting for the ANGRAU Home Science College at Saifabad, there are not many recognised institutes in the State offering such courses.

Proposal approved

In a bid to provide an opportunity for men to pursue home science courses through ANGRAU, the university’s Academic Council which met recently approved the proposal for establishing the two new colleges, said ANGRAU Dean of Home Science P. Rajyalakshmi.

The Faculty of Home Science comprises five departments, including Food and Nutrition, Family Resource Management, Home Science Extension and Communication Management, Human Development and Family Studies and Textiles and Apparel Designing and offers over 80 different courses.

Each department offers several undergraduate, post-graduate, diploma and post-graduate diploma courses with a maximum intake of 20 women students into each course.

Courses at the two new colleges would be offered under co-education system and modalities are being worked out to decide the number of seats to be allotted for men and women in each course. The council has already sent an application to the State government seeking allotment of land and funds for establishing the colleges.
