Wedding bells ring for two visually challenged persons

TIRUCHI: Wedding bells rang loud for two visually challenged, who were wedded to individuals without disability.

Visually challenged R. Sivakumar entered into wedlock with A. Rajeshwari and S. Pushpanadan Williams wedded visually challenged M. Baby. Indian Red Cross, Tiruchi Branch, and social activist K. Selvaraj organised the wedding.

The wedding, which took place recently in the city, was presided over by Collector T. Soundiah. General Manager (Human Resources), BHEL, Tiruchi, T. Ananthan, donated wedding essentials to the couples.

School bags distributed

Additional General Manger (Valves), BHEL, D. Krishnamoorthy distributed school bags, notebooks and stationeries to 100 school children of visually challenged parents during the wedding. K. Lavanya, daughter of a visually challenged, student, was honoured for scoring 481 in SSLC examination with a cash award of Rs.1,000.

Welfare assistances of various other kinds were also distributed during the wedding.

A documentary on the lives of visually challenged on television spurred Mr. Selvaraj to work towards their empowerment. Actively involved in spreading the message of need for eye donation, Mr. Selvaraj has played a key role in collecting 462 pairs of eyes to aid the lost regain the vision.

“I’ve facilitated 45 weddings for visually challenged so far in 15 years. Many people without disability are not hesitant to get married to visually challenged. They make a responsible life partners,” Mr. Selvaraj said.
