“Regularise services of noon meal workers”

Staff Reporter

MADURAI: The State Government should regularise the services of noon-meal workers, anganwadi helpers, panchayat assistants and overhead tank operators and similar workers in other departments, said G. Suriyamoorthy, president, Tamil Nadu Government Officials Union (TNGOU), on Saturday.

Addressing members of the union covering Madurai, Dindigul, Sivaganga and Ramanathapuram districts prior to inauguration of the zonal conference here, Mr. Suriyamoorthy said that these workers, numbering around 3.6 lakh, had put in more than 20 years of service but continued to get daily wages/consolidated pay. “The Government should regularise the services of these poor workers and give them time-scale pay and pension benefits,” he said.

In a resolution passed at the conference, the TNGOU appealed to the government to set right the anomalies in fixation of revised pay for various cadres of staff and officials before implementing the pay revision based on the recommendations of Fifth State Pay Commission. It pointed out that joint council meetings had not been held for 6 years and said that they should be held regularly to sort out outstanding issues. The conference wanted the government to rework the colonial period conduct rules, which were followed till now, to suit contemporary conditions and also called for the abolition of professional tax for government employees.

It passed a resolution thanking the Chief Minister, M. Karunanidhi, for restoring the concessions, which were withdrawn during the previous regime.

A rally was held prior to the conference in which around 1000 employees participated.
