MADURAI: Members of Parliamentary Standing Committee on External Affairs expressed their dissatisfaction over the functioning of the Madurai Passport Office on Saturday.

The panel, led by Laxminarayan Pandey, has convened a meeting of officials from the district administration, Passport Office, Central Public Works Department, Department of Posts and the Police Department to fine-tune the functioning of Passport Office.

The Palani Parliamentary constituency member, S. K. Karvendan, who was part of 11-member panel, said that the committee that visited Malapuram Passport Office on Friday would inspect Tiruchi Passport Office on Monday.

Facilities for visitors

The panel has asked officials to provide proper pandal for visitors and introduce token system to prevent people from waiting in the queue for longer durations.

Earlier, during inspection, the members expressed unhappiness over the undue delay in processing passport applications. One of them wanted the Passport Officer to have a mobile phone so that he could be directly contacted by the public to get their grievances redressed.

This follows complaints that officials were not attending landline telephones calls.

The meeting, proposed to be held at 10.30 a.m. here on Monday, would discuss the available infrastructure at the passport office and the issues to be redressed for speeding up the process.

The Chief Passport Officer, R. Swaminathan, was present.
