S. Prabhakaran made ICJ director

Legal Correspondent

S. Prabhakaran

New Delhi: In a rare honour, the International Council of Jurists (ICJ) appointed S. Prabhakaran, vice-chairman of the All India Bar Association, as one of its directors at a meeting in Washington on July 10. He was among candidates from 80 countries.

The appointment communication was sent to Mr. Prabhakaran by Sarah Marchington, director and secretary of the ICJ. From India, a panel of 21 lawyers was recommended for the post. Three were short-listed and finally Mr. Prabhakaran was selected.

The ICJ now has three directors — two from the U.K. and one from Australia. It has offices in London, New York and Washington and its members include serving and retired judges and eminent lawyers from many nations.

The ICJ is dedicated to promoting a co-operative environment for people from legal fields all over the world. It acts as a common stage to meet and interact, to promote common interest and social justice. The main objective is to uphold the honour, dignity and the independence of the Bar and the Bench, jurists, teachers and students of law and members of the press.

On an invitation from the Chief Justice of the International Court of Justice, Ms. Justice Higgins, a six-member Indian delegation, including Mr. Prabhakaran, is visiting The Hague in the Netherlands on July 17. They will be joined by judges and jurists from other countries.

On July 18, the delegation is scheduled to visit two leading Bar associations and two premier universities in Amsterdam. On July 19 and 20, it will be on official visit to Norway, Denmark and Belgium to study the international trends in jurisprudence and judicial institutions in those countries.
