Uneasiness in Capital over shooting cases

Staff Reporter

One detained for Madangir shooting

Three were shot dead in south Delhi on Friday

NEW DELHI: A string of violent incidents unleashed by motorcycle-borne men in the past few days have spread a wave of uneasiness across the Capital.

Under pressure to show results, the police on Sunday erected barricades on roads and began random checking of two-wheelers, especially in areas where such incidents have been reported in the past few days. Surveillance has also been mounted on criminal elements released from the jail recently and police patrolling intensified at night.

‘Case of robbery’

The latest incident was reported at Madangir in Ambedkar Nagar around 7-30 p.m. on Saturday when four men on motorcycles targeted Pawan (22) and his relative Naresh (24) in their grocery shop. The men allegedly tried to rob them of their daily proceeds. When the duo offered resistance, the criminals opened fire. Naresh was shot at twice, while Pawan sustained a bullet injury.

The injured were rushed to Batra Hospital where they are said to be out of danger. The police have registered a case of attempt-to-murder and have detained one person on suspicion of his involvement. Although the victims have not given their statements to the police yet, their relatives alleged that it was a case of robbery.

Police teams formed

Enquiries by the police revealed that the shop was earlier targeted by criminals in 2003. Subsequently its owners were issued arms licence for their personal security and a police picket had also been set up nearby.

Several police teams have been formed to follow leads in the case and backgrounds of local criminals are also being screened.

Earlier on Friday, three young men were killed in two shooting incidents in South Delhi. The criminals, who were on motorcycles, shot dead Ashmit (28) and Harpreet (27) at Amar Colony.

Later joined by two more men, the assailants tried to rob a motorcyclist of his vehicle near Andrews Ganj. When he tried to grapple with them, they opened fire killing a scooterist, Sanjeev Singh, who was passing that way.

Another incident

In another incident reported at Shakarpur this past week, Mahesh Kapoor -- who worked for a mobile phone showroom -- was shot dead and robbed of Rs.1.35 lakh in cash in broad daylight. The robbers, who pumped nine bullets into his body, also tried to rob a motorcyclist of his vehicle while fleeing.
