TAMBARAM: The presence of mind of the driver of an express train prevented an accident in Irumbuliyur near Tambaram on Sunday morning.
Rockfort Express, between Kumbakonam and Chennai Egmore (No. 6178), usually reaches Tambaram railway station around 4.15 a.m.
On Sunday, the train reached Irumbuliyur, about one kilometre ahead of Tambaram, at 4.25 a.m.
The engine driver, Suresh Kumar, noticed a concrete sleeper placed across the railway tracks below the road overbridge in Irumbuliyur.
Train hits sleeper
He slowed down and applied the brakes, but the train hit the sleeper and came to a halt a few metres away.
He alerted Southern Railway staff on duty at Tambaram over the wireless. Minutes later, Duty Station Master Sivasankaran and personnel from the Government Railway Police and Railway Protection Force rushed to the spot.
Lexus, a canine from the RPF Kennel in Tambaram, picked up a scent and went up the bridge. Further investigations are on to trace the culprits.
The train proceeded to Tambaram after a delay of 15 minutes, police added.
