The government is taking measures to rehabilitate beggars.
The Government care camp for beggars at Melpakkam can accommodate 950 members. The number of members is more during winter or summer as several beggars seek shelter.
Besides medical care, vocational training is provided to them. Rehabilitation homes for leprosy patients are being run in 10 places.
About Rs.7.50 crore has been allocated this year towards the rehabilitation of beggars. There is a proposal to construct a new home at a cost of Rs.1.29 crore to accommodate 100 families.
