Catering services hit?
Amutha Kannan
Flights that touch base in Coimbatore, have food loaded in place of origin Nobody is approaching the local caterers
With all sectors connected to aviation being hit, either directly or indirectly by inflation, the in-flight catering services too do not seem to be an exception. While in-flight catering is not applicable to low-cost airliners, it is customary in the standard flights to offer a snack or a meal for its passengers.
But, in the case of Coimbatore, the flights that touch base here have food loaded in the place of origin or destination. Though earlier, some airliners were using the services of local caterers.
Now, they too have shifted their catering services to those in other cities from where they originate.
This is attributed to time constraints, rather than of price, as one would have expected. Though most of the catering is done for the airliners from metros, which on a general assumption will cost slightly more than that of a tier-2 city like Coimbatore, they do not seem to mind. In this scenario, the state of in-flight caterers here seems to look bleak. With no airliners seeming to approach them for services, they are forced to look at other alternatives. In spite of 22 landings a day and approximately seven airliners operating a day on an average, the local aviation industry does not seem to be contributing in terms of revenue to the hospitality industry.
