State-level meet on ‘Empowerment of Women with Hearing Impairments’ held Plans to start diploma in special education for teachers HYDERABAD: Efforts will be made to push for a special section for students with hearing impairments in each junior college and at least one degree college in each zone, Chaya Ratan, Principal Secretary, Disabled Welfare Department promised the students with hearing impairments on Saturday. Speaking at the first ever State-level meet on Empowerment of Women with Hearing Impairments, Ms. Ratan also informed about a proposal to upgrade the junior college for the deaf at Bapatla to a degree college. G.O. for loan“A G.O. has been issued towards provision of loan up to Rs. 60,000 to physically-challenged students wanting to pursue post-graduate and professional courses. In addition, the government will bear the cost of their post-matric studies,” she said. Also on cards is the launch of a Diploma course in Special Education aimed to equip teachers with technical and other skills needed to deal with children with disabilities. Workshops will be organised by the department on request, for preparing the disabled children to face the examination by State Board of Technical Education and Training. “We have trained about 53 visually-challenged students who all passed the exam. In fact, we had the examiners remarking that the physically-challenged students performed better than the normal ones,” she said amid applause. Hearing aidsOrders have been issued against the distribution of hearing aids through public programmes as it was found that the instruments needed personalised designs. Moulds will be prepared according to the measurements of each disabled person’s ear and instruments will be designed thereof, she said. WarningMs. Ratan warned those obtaining pensions other benefits on bogus identity with imprisonment up to two years and a penalty of Rs. 20,000. V. Janaki, president of the Network, appealed for hostels for the hearing-impaired working women and students, skill development training, full pensions, provision of interpreters, loans, district and state level sports meets, filling of backlog vacancies and enhanced number of seats in the schools and colleges for the deaf.
