Don’t support nuclear deal till fishermen issue is resolved: DMDK

“Firing by Sri Lankan Navy perfect example of rights violation”

RAMESWARAM: Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam founder Vijayakant has urged the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam not to support the nuclear deal until the Tamil Nadu fishermen issue is resolved.
Key issue
“The ruling party men claim that the United Progressive Alliance Government is ruling the country under the guidance of the Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi. The State has lost more than 300 innocent fishermen to the bullets of the Sri Lankan Navy since 1983. No doubt, it is a key issue of the State. Hence, the Chief Minister should use his “power” at the Centre to solve the issue,” he said.
He was speaking at a demonstration held here on Sunday to protest against the Sri Lankan Navy for using its force against innocent fishermen and the failure of the State and Central governments to protect them.
Mr. Vijayakant said Mr. Karunanidhi had occupied the Chief Minister’s chair five times. But, he had not taken sincere and concrete steps to solve the quarter-century-old issue even though the UPA had won 40 MPs from Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.
He should have pressured the Centre to retrieve Katchatheevu, the lifeline of fishermen, utilising his power and the rare chance.
Condemning the Sri Lankan Navy for gunning down two fishermen of Vedaranyam on Friday, he said, “The firing and harassment by Sri Lankan Navy of fishermen are the perfect examples of violation of human rights.”
