An indiscriminate attack: probe
Special Correspondent
RAMESWARAM: The investigation conducted by the police, State and Central intelligence agencies into the Friday’s firing by the Sri Lankan Navy, causing the death of two Vedaranyam fishermen, revealed it was an indiscriminate attack.
Of the 20 bullet marks found in the fibreglass boat, 19 were found in the inner and outer portions of the boat, while one mark was found in the engine. Intelligence sources told The Hindu on Sunday that the fishermen were targeted at a close range. Based on complaint and the version of the injured fisherman, the Vedaranyam police registered a murder case. The intelligence agencies received information that the Sri Lankan Navy reportedly opened fire at a boat at the same location on Saturday evening.
There were four crew members in the fiberglass boat belonging to Pushpavanam village.
Though no one was injured, the navy personnel boarded the boat, assaulted the crew members and cut their fishing nets.
