P. Rameshan “Quality and time-bound completion of projects are the bywords on which the Uralungal Labour Contract Co-operative Society (ULCCS) was founded,” says P. Rameshan, president of the more than 84-year-old labour society, a pioneer people’s initiative that has left a mark in the road and bridge construction sector in the State. In a chat with The Hindu, Mr. Rameshan lists out the reasons for the spectacular success of the society in a sector where competition was high. “We moved forward with discipline based on a five-year warranty period,” he muses, “and the strict time-frame has stood us in good stead.” “We get government projects for the quality we maintain, and not because of political considerations.” A keen interest has been evinced in the ‘clock-work precision functioning’ of the ULCCS says Mr. Rameshan who has been president of ULCCS for more than three decades. He is a recipient of the Indira Gandhi Sadbhavan Award 2005, and the Karma Ratna award of the Indo-Arab Confederation Council 2008 among others. Mr. Rameshan has been selected as member of the Central Government Advisory Board of Labour Cooperatives headed by Union Minister Sharad Pawar. “We are highly sensitive to public sentiments. The society overcame the sand scarcity by crushing quarry wastes to fine particles to use instead of sand,” he muses. The ULCCS has primarily been involved in road and bridge works in grama, block and District panchayats, taking up 80 per cent of the works of local bodies. The society has taken up 90 per cent of road works in Nadapuram, Onjiyam, Cherode and Eramala. It has also taken up a sizeable amount of road works for Vadakara Municipality and to some extent in the Thalasserry Municipality as well. Major projects now being taken up by the society is the flyover work at Arayadathupalam in Kozhikode City and the Sarovaram project for Tourism Department and the beautification of Kappad Beach. The Rs.33-crore flyover project was to be completed in 18 months. Maleeha Raghaviah
