NEW HEIGHTS: The Chairperson, R. Kasturi Thangam, addressing a municipal council meeting in Tuticorin on Monday. Tuticorin: An emergency municipal council meeting held here on Monday resolved to upgrade infrastructure in the town at a cost of Rs.16.49 crore, as it is going to be elevated as a Corporation from August 5. Municipal Chairperson R. Kasturi Thangam said that of the planned outlay, Rs.4.75 crore would be earmarked for the construction of a two-storied edifice for Corporation office. The building would house the chambers of Mayor, Deputy Mayor and Commissioner, besides equipped with e-governance facilities. As part of the package, 16 ‘notified parks’ situated would be beautified by establishing lawns, better seating arrangements, walking tracks and lighting. A retaining wall would be constructed to protect Roche Park from sea erosions. A total of 14 road stretches would be strengthened at a cost of Rs.1.78 crore. The lion’s share of allocation would be utilised for the improvement of Victoria Extension Road, Bryant Nagar Main Road, Chidambara Nagar Main Road and Jeyaraj Road. Stormwater drains would be established along the sides of roads at eight places. The remaining amount would be spent on augmentation of water supply and establishment of computerised water distribution monitoring system. AIADMK protestAdvocate R. Veerabahu, an AIADMK councillor, questioned the municipal administration’s decision to spent a whopping Rs.81 lakh for inaugural of Tuticorin Corporation by the Chief Minister. “It’s indeed a pity that the administration has allocated such a huge amount for setting up ‘pandhal’ and beautification of the venue (S.A.V. School ground) at a time when the residents were facing acute shortage of drinking water and other basic amenities,” he said. Municipal Commissioner R. Lakshmi participated.
