Students excel in athletic meet

Students of George Higher Secondary School at Vishnupuram, Thanjavur, have won nine gold and eleven silver medals at the district level Junior Athletic Competitions. They participated in the State level Junior Athletic competitions held recently at Tiruvarur. Secretary of the school N. Kalyanasundaram and Headmistress of the school K. Maithili, teachers and parents congratulated the students for their achievement at the district level.

World Population Day

Students of the Kasthurba Gandhi Kanya Gurukulam Girls Higher Secondary School at Vedaranyam in Nagapattinam district took out a rally through the main streets of Vedaranyam town last week and observed World Population Day. The students carried placards to create awareness among the people about the ill effects due to population explosion. The school had also organised an oratorical contest for its students at a function Friday in the presence of M. Jeeva, Headmistress of the school, who presided.

Coaching on easy mathematics

A special coaching class on easy mathematics was conducted exclusively for the students of XI Standard of Kittappa Municipal Higher Secondary School at Mayiladuturai in Nagapattinam district on Friday. Shahul Hameed, a specialist in teaching easy way of solving problems in mathematics, gave coaching to nearly 550 students of the school sponsored by Jain Sangam of Mayiladuturai.

Stationery distributed

The Tirupalani Thaipoosa Annadana Sangam, Kozhikode, under its free educational aid programme distributed note books, pens and pencils to about 130 poor students of the Pudukotti Municipal Middle School. The secretary of the Ulaga Tirukkural Peravai, T.S. Malaiyappan presided over the function. The president of the Rotary Club of Pudukottai P. Karuppiah, president of the Pudukottai Ilakkiya Peravai, M. Muthusrinivasan, and others distributed notebooks, pens and pencils to the students. The convener of the Annadana Sangam, G. Sundararajan offered felicitations.

Sapling planting campaign

Under the auspices of the National Green Corps (NGC) and Environment Club of the Government Upper Primary School, Pudukottai, sapling planting campaign was held at the school premises recently. The Headmaster of the school, C. Muthukaruppan presided. The vice-chairman of the Pudukottai Municipality, K. Naina Mohamed, the Municipal Councillor, M. Karnam, were the chief guests and they inaugurated the campaign. The staff in-charge of the NGC and the Environment Club, V. Gunaseelan, teachers, Vasuki, Kamatchi and J. Paulin Jayarani explained the importance of increasing the forest cover on the occasion. Hema, a member of the NGC, also spoke. The tree planting campaign was carried out on the directions of the Chief Educational Officer, S. Chellam.

Seminar on disaster management

Under the auspices of the Thanjavur district NSS unit, a special seminar on disaster management and anti-tobacco was held at the Sri Venkateswara Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Thanjavur, recently. The District Education Officer, Kumar, in his special address explained in detail how the NSS volunteers should act before, during and after disasters to bring solace to the affected people. He said that forests prevented loss of human lives and property during the tsunami in a big way and urged them to take steps for increasing the forest cover. Mr. Kumar explained in detail how the non-adherence of road rules led to serious road accidents and the role the NSS volunteers could play in creating awareness among the common people. A. Manimaran spoke on the ill-effects of using tobacco. Headmaster of the school Jayasankar, Thanjavur district NSS Liaison Officer and S. Pugazhendi, Pattukottai area NSS Liaison Officer Ram Manohar also spoke. NSS programme officer of the Marungulam Government Higher Secondary School Vivekanandan administered the anti-tobacco oath to the students.

Focus on importance of learning skills

A three-day ‘Advanced Activity Learning Methodology’ training programme was conducted at Nizam Oriental Arabic High School in Pudukottai recently. The Headmaster M.S. Hajamohideen inaugurating the programme, explained its importance in promoting the learning skills of students. Resource persons led by K.M. Adhappan conducted the programme.

Computer donated

The Lions Club of Pudukottai Victory donated a computer worth Rs.20,000 to the Municipal School, Pudukottai, as part of its project for the year 2008-09. Shortly after the installation of the new office-bearers was completed, the president of the club P. Jawahar gave away the computer to the Headmistress Meena Sudarsanan in the presence of the former Lions district governor R. Swaminathan and the Managing Director of Team Speciality Hospital K.H. Saleem. “We identified the needs of schools in the town and selected the Municipal School”, said Mr. Jawahar.

Kamaraj birth anniversary

Under the auspices of the Education Department, several competitions were held as part of celebrations of the 106th birth anniversary of the former Chief Minister the late Kamaraj. Scores of students from a total of 32 schools in the Pudukottai educational district participated in the ‘Rangoli’ and oratorical competitions held at the Government Higher Secondary School in Tirugokarnam. The dance competition was held at Sacred Heart Girls’ Higher Secondary School in the town.

Awareness programme

Under the auspices of the Fire Service and Rescue Department, an awareness programme on ‘fire prevention’ was organised at Amala Annai Matriculation Higher Secondary School at Ponnamaravathy near Pudukottai recently. Personnel from the Fire Service and Rescue Department conducted a demonstration session on first aid techniques. They explained how the golden hour should be utilised. Application of presence of mind was all the more necessary. One should not develop any tension or anxiety when a fire broke out, but should act swiftly. Emergency equipment such as fire extinguisher should be kept ready, they said. The resource-persons -- Rajasekaran, Singaram, Purushothaman and Subramanian, who conducted the session, also clarified students’ doubts during the question-hour.

The Principal Jesu Mary presided over the function. The Physical Education Teacher Pazhanisamy explained the importance of preventive measures against the incidence of fire accidents.
