Thiruvananthapuram
Thiruvananthapuram: What does N.K.Premachandran have in common with the late Malayattoor Ramakrishnan, Prof. M.Krishnan Nair, Prem Nazir, T.V.Chandran, Nawab Rajendran and Kadammanitta Ramakrishnan? At one time or the other, they were all residents of the Cooperative Home, more popularly known as Karthika, behind the Secretariat building. One of the first hostels in the city, Karthika was home to several personalities who went on to make it big in politics, music, business, journalism, filmdom, IT, culture, literature, journalism and the bureaucracy, besides other fields. The hostel building is no more. It was demolished more than a year back after the plot was bought by a construction firm. To share memoriesFormer Karthika dwellers are now preparing to share memories of the time spent at the institution that served as a second home to most of them. The initiative was taken by Philipose Padikkal. Named Nostalgia 2008, the event is being planned for December. As a prelude to the programme, a meeting is being planned here. Mr.Philippose who is now busy trying to dredge up the history of the hostel, believes that it could be more than 100 years old. OriginsKarthika was started by Adinarayanan Thampi as a hostel for students at the Thiruvananthapuram Law College at a time when the campus was situated at the site currently occupied by the AG’s office. It was later taken over and renamed Cooperative Home by the pioneer of the cooperative movement K.N. Elankath and his brother Banker Krishna Pillai. The organisers of Nostalgia 2008 can be contacted at the following telephone number 9447087740, fax. No. 0471-2327708 or e- mail address: padikkal@asianetindia.com
