PUDUCHERRY: Students of Amalorpavam Higher Secondary School were on a winning spree as they bagged prizes in a number of sports events, including chess and carrom tournaments. A chess tournament was held at the school as part of the zone I School Games Championship for 2008-2009. Students from 37 schools participated in the tournament in various categories. Three students of Amalorpavam Higher Secondary School bagged the first and second prizes. While V. Nivedha of Class IX won the first place in the junior level, S. Kousika of Class VII and V. Niranjan of Class VIII stood second in the tournament. At the Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry State Championship Open Carrom Tournament, organised by Leo Sports Club from July 11 to 13, Lavanya of Standard VIII came second in the overall championship in the girls junior category. In the boys category, S. Kishore of Class VIII won the third place in the overall championship. The Renewable Energy Conservation department organised an essay competition at the school in which J. Shahanaze of Class XII secured the first prize, M. Fauzia Parvin of Standard XII came second and K. Rajeswari of Class XII received the third prize for writing on “Conservation of Energy”. A number of students of Petit Seminaire Higher Secondary School emerged winners at the State-level 11th Archbishop’s Rolling Trophy Table Tennis tournament organised by the Petit Seminaire Table Tennis Club from June 27 to 29. Students of various age groups participated in the tournament. Class X student R. Vijayakrishnan bagged the Rolling Trophy in the men’s single and also emerged as the winner in the junior boys level. While N. Ashok Kanna of Standard IV won in the mini cadet boys level, V. Sudarsanane of Class VI was the runner-up in the cadet boys category and won the non-medalist singles. The tournament was inaugurated by Vice President of Pondicherry Table Tennis Association R. Parthasarathy and Deputy Director of Sports and Games Fathimaraj took part. Chief Mentor of Achariya Group of Educational Institutions J. Aravindhan distributed the prizes to winners. Principal of school Fr. M.S. John Bosco appreciated the budding table tennis players. ProjectsAt Sankara Vidyalaya, books and certificates were distributed to students who successfully completed the holiday assignment and project activity. Three students of the school, K. Vijayshree and S. Divya of Class IX and Sruthi of Class XI, have been selected in the first round for Balashree Awards instituted by Government of Puducherry. While Vijayshree participated in playing percussion instrument, Divya and Sruthi took part in story, poetry, essay and debate competition. The Guides movement of the school entered the second year and the guides have become proficient in first aid on attending the patrol leadership camp. The girl guides learnt about the guide law, promise and motto. Sports events for students of Class IV and V were organised and events, including 50 metres race, long jump, hopping race and ball throwing, were held. Students of Alpha Matriculation Higher Secondary School secured the first and third rank in the Centralised Admission Committee results. A. Mogan Raj secured the first rank and R. M. Alagappan stood third in the CENTAC list.
