ARNI: Tiruvannamalai Collector M. Rajendran inaugurated Sri Bharathi Women’s Arts and Science College at Kunnathur in Arni taluk on Monday.

The college is the third women’s arts and science college and the 13th arts and science college in Tiruvannamalai district, he said.

A.R. Veeramani, Registrar-in-charge, Thiruvalluvar University, called upon the students to develop their communication skills to fare well in interviews and get placements.

The college should also motivate the students to acquire soft skills, he said.

V.P. Radhakrishnan, college correspondent, who presided, said that about 10,000 students passed Plus-Two every year in the schools situated in and around Arni and nearby towns in Tiruvannamalai and Vellore districts.

Many girls could not opt for higher studies owing to the absence of a women’s college in the vicinity of their town or village.

He hoped that the new college would help such students to pursue higher studies.

G. Senthil Kumar, college principal, said that the college would offer B.C.A., B.Sc. computer science, B.Sc. mathematics, B.B.A. and B.Com. The college offered 50 per cent concession in fees to the students who scored more than 1,000 marks in Plus-Two public examinations. National Service Scheme (NSS) and National Cadet Corps (NCC) units would be started soon.

The college operated buses to pick up students from Arni, Vellore, Arcot, Chetput, Cheyyar, Polur and Vandavasi, Mr. Kumar said.

R. Gowri Radhakrishnan, chairman, Jayalakshmi Ammal Trust, which manages the college, D.S. Sundaram, adviser to the college, and Ramachandran, Member, Syndicate, Thiruvalluvar University, participated in the function.
