Invoking the gods for rain

Chitradurga: A unique Hindustani music concert invoking the rain gods was held here on Sunday.

The district is yet to receive adequate rainfall. S. Saumyashri, a young singer, presented 13 different compositions relating to rain. The programme was organised by the Chitradurga-based Brahmana Sangha in association with the Gamaka Kalabhimanigala Sangha at the Gayatri Kalyan Mantap.

According to the organisers, the district normally starts receiving rain by June 10. The delay in rainfall has become a major cause of concern for farmers. Ms. Saumyashri, an engineering graduate, sung compositions by Meerabai, Kabir and Purandaradasa. She also sang bhajans and classical songs composed by Kuvempu and Da. Ra. Bendre.

Other artistes who accompanied her were Pandit Totappa Uttangi on the harmonium, Pandit Chandraiah Hiremath on the tabla and Vidwan B. Chandrashekhar Shastri on the rhythm pad.
