Our village Mangudi in Thiruthuraipoondi taluk of Tiruvarur district is getting drinking water from Kollidam-Kodiakarai water project. Now drinking water is not reaching the middle and tail end areas due to poor maintenance and insufficient power supply for the water pump. Tail end areas have not been getting water completely for the past two years. This was brought to the notice of the authorities many times, but the problem was not solved. P. V. Nadimuthu, Mangudi, Thiruthuraipoondi taluk. IIAs Thanjavur is the delta of the Cavery, residents of the Medical College area could not even get proper supply of drinking water. In LIC Colony and Manickam Nagar since the supply of water is very poor, many houses are using high voltage pumps to fill their tanks, which affects the flow to other areas. We request the Municipal authorities to take necessary action to regulate the supply of drinking water. R. D. Sathiya Rajesh, Thanjavur - 7. Stamp on Field MarshalA crisp write up on Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw by Pangaja Srinivasan in the Young World (The Hindu, July 8) in the above caption is very informative, interesting not only for youngsters but also for elders. Unfortunately in our country many brave heroes in olive green faded into oblivion. Efforts should be made to include their biographies in school books so that younger generation may be inspired by their selfless service to the nation. It would be a fitting tribute to the great soul if government take steps to bring out a commemorative postal stamp in honour of Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw to perpetuate his memory. R. Jambunathan, Thiruthuraipoondi. More berths in Chennai trainsA lot of letters appearing in this column crying for increased allotment of berths for Thanjavur, Kumbakonam and Tiruchi passengers in the trains to Chennai. I would like to suggest the Railway authorities the following steps to fulfil the above requirement: 1. Terminate the Rockfort Express at Tiruchi itself. Coaches allotted for Kumbakonam and Thanjavur can cater to the needs of Tiruchi passengers. 2. Operate two new trains for Kumbakonam and Thanjavur passengers. One can be operated from Chennai to Kumbakonam as night train via Tiruchi and Thanjavur. This can be operated as day express in the return direction. The other train can be operated as day express from Chennai to Kumbakonam via Tiruchi and Thanjavur and can be operated as night express in the return direction. This will satisfy Tiruchi, Thanjavur and Kumbakonam passengers till the BG conversion between Mayiladuturai and Villupuram is complete in which the new trains can be operated in the main line. A.M. Mohamed Jabarulla, Thanjavur - 7. Streetlights not workingThe Tiruvaiyaru town panchayat is neglecting the interest and safety of the residents of ward No.7. The street lights in Pillaiyar Koils Street of Sri Ram Nagar are not burning for the past three months. The matter has been reported to Panchayat officials umpteen times. Recently the matter was taken to the knowledge of the ward councillor also. But of no use. As the place is now in darkness, pedestrians walk to their homes with fear that may step on snakes any time. Hence the authorities concerned should take immediate action. J. Santhanam, Tiruvaiyaru Solid waste managementAll over the State, the municipalities, have been spending lakhs of rupees, for the purchase of mini-lorries, wheel-barrows, push carts, fibre buckets, dumper truck, bins etc, every year, but not having the patience, to segregate the organic waste, either for the production of compost, or think of an innovative idea, of generation of power, from waste like the Tiruchi Corporation and Thanjavur Municipality, so that the electric charges for streetlights and municipal property could be saved much. Will the Commissioner of Municipal Administration look into this sorry state of affairs, in all the municipalities and ensure that the solid-waste management scheme is not becoming a white-elephant? R.S. Moorthy, Karur - 4. Shadow war on nuclear dealWhen prices of all commodities soaring higher and higher, when there is a shortage of energy and fuel, agricultural production has dangerously slowed down, the UPA government and Left parties are fighting a shadow battle on nuclear deal. R. Ramaiah, Pudukkottai. Bad roadsSrinagar Colony and Tiruvalluvar Nagar roads are in a bad condition. As town buses are running on these roads, repairs and relaying of these roads have to be carried out immediately. K. Santhanam, Kumbakonam - 1.
