School of performing arts of university to be expanded

PUDUCHERRY: In an effort to promote performing arts, the Pondicherry University plans to start a postgraduate degree in music and a diploma in Fine Arts.

Inaugurating a workshop-cum-exhibition of fine arts on Monday, Vice-Chancellor of the university J.A.K. Tareen said it had been proposed to the University Grants Commission to start a Masters programme in music.

“We will also start a diploma in fine arts. The existing school of performing arts of the university will be expanded with additional activities. We will add more space for the school,” he said.

It was for the first time that the university had organised an exhibition of paintings, he said. The exhibition displayed the works of the Principal of Bharathiar Palkalai Koodam, “Sirpi” M. Jayaraman.

“Any art or music is part of life. Life is complete only when we have some taste for fine arts, music and activities which are not too materialistic,” the Vice-Chancellor said.

He suggested that another exhibition with amateur artists of Puducherry be conducted.

“The exhibition could have the works of young talents. It would have a variety of expressions. The university would like to acquire some of the talents for the faculties and departments. We can place the works on the walls of the university to break the monotony of blank walls,” he said.

On the media centre of the university, he said it would work in tandem to promote fine arts. “The university will help to promote fine arts, dance and music,” Mr. Tareen said.

During the two-day workshop, Mr. Jayaraman, along with BPK students, would hold painting demonstration for students of the university and drawing demonstration for the Kids Centre, a day care centre for children at the university. The exhibition would be open on Tuesday.

Director of Culture and Cultural Relations of the university A. Balasubramanian said the directorate was organising such programmes to enhance cultural activities.
