On cloud nine: Successful cadets in a jubilant mood at the passing out parade in APPA, Himayatsagar in Hyderabad on Monday. HYDERABAD: Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy has said that the Maoists could not hope to demoralise the police force by carrying out sneak attacks like the one at Chitrakonda in Orissa where 38 personnel of Greyhounds were killed a few days ago. He promised that the State government would bear any expenditure to support the families of policemen who laid down their lives in such attacks. It would recognise the sacrifice of these ‘martyrs’ for ever, Dr. Reddy said while addressing the ‘Passing-out Parade’ of 250 probationary Deputy Superintendents of Police and cadet Reserve Sub-Inspectors of police at the AP Police Academy (APPA) here on Monday. The Chief Minister lauded the efforts of the police in checking terrorism during the last four years. Factionalism was also well under control but white collared offences were still prevalent. He asked the force to pay special attention to crimes against women and Scheduled Castes and tribes. Word of cautionDr. Reddy cautioned the police about resorting to lathicharge or firing in passion on anti-social activities like protests and rallies could bring a bad name to the government. The police should ensure that the agitators were not denied their democratic rights and at the same time they did not take law into their hands. The government faced the consequences of deaths caused on account of firing, he added. He promised to upgrade APPA into a deemed university and announced 30 per cent incentive over pay for its staff. Home Minister K. Jana Reddy called for corrective action by police so that the lapses at Chitrakonda were not repeated. He asked the police force to draw a line in their approach to criminals and innocents. Director General of Police S.S.P. Yadav and APPA Director C.N. Gopinath Reddy also spoke.
