Veerendrakumar says he will back the Left

Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Janata Dal (Secular) State president M.P. Veerendrakumar, MP, has said that he will vote with the Left against the confidence motion in Parliament on July 21-22. Speaking to The Hindu over phone, Mr. Veerendrakumar said he had resolved to vote with the Left regardless of the stand to be taken by the Janata Dal (S) led by the former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda.

Asked if he would do so even at the cost of losing his membership in the Lok Sabha in the event of Mr. Gowda issuing a whip for a vote in favour of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government, Mr. Veerendrakumar said he would not mind violating the whip because his opposition was to the Indo-U.S. nuclear deal. On the earlier move to merge the Surendra Mohan-led Janata Dal (S) with the Samajwadi Party (SP), he said the proposal had to be revisited in the light of the changed political situation.

The meeting of the party national council, which was supposed to be held in Puducherry in August to take a decision on merger of the Surendra Mohan-led Janata Dal (S) with the SP, would now be cancelled. The national executive and national council would meet in Delhi to decide the future course of action.
