Markfed seeks hike in MSP for maize

Special Correspondent.

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Co-operative Marketing Federation has urged the Centre to hike minimum support price (MSP) for maize from the present Rs. 620 to Rs. 840, considering increasing input costs every season.

In a letter to Union Minister for Agriculture Sharad Pawar, chairman, AP Markfed, Ponnam Prabhakar said AP was one of the largest maize producers, harvesting 31 lakh metric tonnes from an estimated 7.58 lakh hectares. However, with most of the area under maize being rain-fed, rising costs of inputs were taking their toll, leaving farmers with precious little.

Mr. Prabhakar said the MSP of Rs. 620, fixed by the Centre for 2007-08 crop season was grossly insufficient and unless it was increased to Rs. 840 as recommended by the Commission for Agriculture Costs and Prices, acreage would be affected.
