Electronic hubs to be set up

Board will be set up for protection of rivers and lakes

JBIC-aided project will not be extended to new areas


THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The government will set up electronic hubs in Thiruvananthapuram and Kochi to attract electronic hardware industries to the State, Minister for Industries Elamaram Karim has said.

Replying to questions in the Assembly on Monday, the Minister said the government had already identified 1,149 acres of land in Kochi for setting up the proposed hub. Mr. Karim said a committee had suggested that the government offer a package of incentives for attracting electronic industries and create an investor-friendly climate and infrastructure facilities.

In reply to another question, Mr. Karim said it was suggested to a Singapore business delegation, which visited the State recently, that Kerala government and Singapore could work together in the fields of free trade and warehousing zone, food processing industries and bio-technology.

Sulphur for Titanium

Steps had been initiated for importing sulphur from the Kuwait Petroleum Company for Travancore Titanium Products Ltd. in the capital, Mr. Karim said in a written reply. The Minister added that a freight station would be set up in Kannur with the assistance of the Central Warehousing Corporation.

Minister for Water Resources N.K. Premachandran said a River and Wetland Authority Board would be set up for protection of rivers and lakes.

The government has no plans to extend the JBIC-aided drinking water scheme to new areas. Fresh tenders will be called for setting up garbage plants at the Pampa and Sabarimala. Twelve projects of the Pampa Action Plan had been cleared.

New factory

In reply to a question, Minister for Law, Parliamentary Affairs and Railways, M. Vijayakumar said construction of bogie frames for railway coaches and side end walls of wagons will be taken up in the proposed Coach Component Factory at Sherthalai.

In the first phase, the assets and entire staff of the Steel Fabrication unit of Steel Industries Kerala Limited (SILK) will be shifted to the proposed company.
