Hubli-Dharwad
HUBLI: The Hubli Police on Monday arrested two persons, posing as journalists, who allegedly tried to blackmail a woman. The police gave the names of the arrested as Govind Joshi of Hubli and Chandrashekhar Attigeri of Saunshi village. According to the police, Malati Venkatesh of Keshwapur used to buy stamp paper for lawyers and litigants from the bank to eke out a living. The accused presented themselves as reporters of a tabloid, “Rajakiya Ranga”, and threatened Malati that they would write about her in their paper, as what she was doing was illegal. They first demanded Rs. 30,000, but later lowered the amount to Rs. 12,000. Meanwhile, Malati informed some of the Vishva Hindu Parishad activists about the blackmailing. They told her to tell the men to meet her on Monday. When the duo came to collect the money, the VHP activists caught them and handed them over to the police. Hubli Suburban Station Police have registered a case.
