Staff Reporter
TIRUNELVELI: The construction of an ultramodern flower market with cold storage and other facilities near Kaavalkinaru Junction on the Tirunelveli-Kanyakumari border began on Monday.
The Government released Rs.1.63 crore in the first phase as announced in the Assembly during the demand for grant of the Agriculture Department.
Auction of flowers in this complex, to come up on 7.40 acre government poromboke land to give a new lease of life to the floriculturists of this region, is expected to commence on Tamil New Year and ‘Pongal 2009.’
Radhapuram MLA and Chairman of Tamil Nadu Assembly Estimates Committee M. Appavu inaugurated the construction .
The market will have an office with Internet facility, huge digital board to display daily rates of flowers, agriculture support centre to render technical assistance to farmers and sell agriculture inputs to them, garland-making units of self-help groups, toilets, dormitory, etc.
Hence, the farmers can sell their produce directly to the consumers and the traders coming from various parts of the country.
