SSC certificate will not be considered for issue ‘Many realising the importance of these documents only at last-minute’ VIJAYAWADA: Many people are not aware of the importance of getting a birth certificate for their newly-born from the authorised registrars of births, which is because of a general notion that this document is of little use in academic or employment-related correspondence. People mostly show their 10th class certificate for proof of date of birth, but it is not always accepted, as in the case of applications for passports. Passport authorities insist that all those born after January 26, 1989, should produce a date of birth certificate issued by the registrar of births in the respective local body. ‘Passport Mela’The importance of birth certificate has come to the fore at the ongoing ‘Passport Mela’ where most of the applicants are being disqualified for applying for a passport because of their failure to produce a correct birth document. The passport officials have made it clear to all such applicants that 10th class certificate will not be considered the valid birth document. Krishna district Joint Collector G. Ramnarayana Reddy told The Hindu on Monday that one could get a true extract of the birth document from the respective municipal authorities in the case of towns and cities, and those born in villages could consult the local revenue officials in whom the powers of registering births and deaths are vested. Those who had no birth document could ask for late registration of their birth based on the 10th class document. This would be done after conducting an inquiry by the respective officials in the revenue department. The Tehsildar concerned would send a report to the Sub-Collector, who would verify the details and order for late registration and issue of birth certificate. Late registrationIn respect of children aged up to five years, late registration of births would be done after their parents produced a doctor’s certificate to the revenue officials. If the birth occurred at home, parents should furnish an affidavit on a Rs. 10 stamp paper. A superintendent in the office of Vijayawada urban Tehsildar said many people were realising the importance of these documents at the last-minute, not just for getting a passport but in higher education and corporate careers too. The general public could make use of the special camps that the revenue department conducts for registration of births, he suggested.
