Airport expansion

With reference to the article ‘Airport expansion goes on amid din over land acquisition’, published in these columns on June 17, it is unfortunate that some voices are being raised against expansion. Many parents of NRIs are shifting to Hyderabad simply because Vijayawada does not have proper air connectivity. Politicising the issue will hurt the interests of Vijayawada and the surroundings, and, in particular, the jobless youth of all classes. People raising objections to airport expansion should understand that acquisition of additional land is inevitable for development of the airport. It is, however, important that the interests of all farmers should be taken care of by means of adequate compensation and an acceptable rehabilitation package.

R.V.L.N.R.G. Prasad,

Siddhartha Nagar, Vijayawada. The airport authorities acquired 80 acres of land in 1989 to extend the runway towards Buddhavaram to facilitate the landing of wide-bodied aircraft, at below the market rate.

Not even a single inch of this land has been utilised during the last 19 years, except constructing a compound wall around it. Where is the necessity for further acquisition without utilising the already acquired one?

As many as 200 acres of land facing the highway opposite the Veterinary College has been lying idle for the past 60 years, which will be ideal for constructing the terminal with a large parking and cargo handling facility.

Narra Sitaramarao,

Roy Nagar, Gannavaram.

Sanitation in Guntur

The feature on sanitation in Guntur pinpoints the real problems. Residents should be more responsible and should not allow rainwater to go out of their compound. I have constructed a soak pit and a storage tank for rainwater collected from the roof-top.

The Guntur Municipal Corporation should announce at least one per cent concession in house tax to those who construct rainwater harvesting structure.

Awareness needs to be created on this along with sanitation drive.

Yella Rathaiah,

Amaravathi Road, Guntur
