VS inaugurates excise headquarters

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Ten percent of all fresh recruits to the Excise Department will, henceforth, be women. The Public Service Commission has okayed a government proposal to this effect, Excise Minister P.K. Gurudasan has said.

He was delivering the presidential address at the inaugural ceremony of the Excise Headquarters building here on Monday.

“As part of making the functioning of the department more effective, the government has decided to post one deputy excise commissioner and an assistant excise commissioner in each district. As a result, 14 assistant excise commissioners will now become deputy commissioners, six deputy commissioners will become joint commissioners and joint commissioners will become additional excise commissioners.”

Department officials are being given physical training; 1,500 officials have already completed the training at the police academy in Thrissur. The government has also decided to establish an excise academy in Thrissur at a cost of more than Rs.3 crore, he said.

In his inaugural address, Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan said though the excise and police departments had stepped up their drive against illicit liquor, there seemed to be no let up in the manufacture and trade of illicit spirit and liquor.

“The government plans to reorganise the Excise Department and make its functioning more efficient by giving it more vehicles, weapons, communication gear and other equipment,” he added.

Ministers Mons Joseph and M. Vijayakumar, Pannian Ravindran, MP, V. Sivankutty, MLA, and Mayor C. Jayan Babu were among those who participated.
