Smooth traffic flow at Punjagutta

Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD: The traffic flow was smooth at Punjagutta junction on Monday, the first working day after the much-awaited inauguration of the Punjagutta ‘Y’ flyover.

But throwing open the new flyover to public with some work left over led to traffic snarls at a couple of points. The government acquired place from the Punjagutta burial ground to create enough space for vehicles coming from the flyover and Vengal Rao Park side.

Though a new compound wall was built along the burial ground leaving space to widen the road, the officials for some inexplicable reasons did not demolish the old compound wall failing to utilise the newly created road space. On the opposite side, the road became too narrow with no road-widening work taken up.

Especially, before the Chutneys hotel, the small road width could not accommodate more than one four-wheeler at a time and thus choked the route.

At the other end of the ‘Y’ flyover near the Chief Minister’s camp-office-cum-residence, vehicles coming ply comfortably from Jubilee Hills to Somajiguda during the lean hours.

However, during the peak hour in the evening vehicles were forced to move at a snail’s pace as traffic got choked on the Greenlands flyover apparently due to the unfinished part on the railway track.

Traffic police lifted the ban on right turns at Punjagutta beneath the new flyover as traffic movement was at manageable level.
