50 per cent of DA of port workers will be merged with basic pay

AT COMMISSIONING: Union Minister for Shipping, Road Transport and Highways T.R. Baalu speaking at the inauguration of Berth 9 in Tuticorin on Monday.

Tuticorin: Union Minister for Shipping, Road Transport and Highways T.R. Baalu said that 50 per cent of Dearness Allowance of the port workers would be merged with basic pay with effect from January 1, 2007.

Replying to the demands of port workers who were planning an indefinite strike from July 16, at the inaugural of Berth 9 here on Monday, he said that prior to pay scale revision, interim relief at the rate of 13.5 per cent of the Basic pay would be paid with effect from January 1, 2007, within a month from now.

Mr. Baalu also assured the workers that the entire balance amount of Productivity Linked Bonus (PLB) consequent on the raising of minimum ceiling limit of PLB from Rs.2,500 to Rs.3,500 would be paid.

The trade union leaders said that further decision on the indefinite strike, whether to proceed or not, would be taken only after a round of consultation with senior labour ministry officials in New Delhi on Tuesday.
