Soz name was discussed, says Omar Abdullah

Staff Reporter

Jammu: National Conference president Omar Abdullah has said that the name of Union Water Resources Minister and Congress leader Saiffuddin Soz was discussed as a chief ministerial candidate before the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly was dissolved.

“In the dying moments of the Assembly, the Home Ministry in Delhi is believed to have written to the Governor asking him not to impose rule from Raj Bhavan and that he should explore options for an elected government,” he wrote on his blog.

“The name of Saif-u-Din Soz was almost agreed upon, until Mufti Sayeed pulled the plug from America. I was not privy to any of these discussions, but my sources are usually credible. Poor Soz has long hoped that he would be able to replace Azad, but this time it was not to be.”

Mr. Abdullah also had a dig at the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) for its “duplicity” in its relationship with the Congress.

He said:

“The UPA had sent an Air Force plane to Srinagar, accompanied by a Joint Director in the Intelligence Bureau, to pick up one passenger. The passenger was not a dreaded militant or a source or a separatist leader going for secret talks with the government.

“The passenger was Mehbooba Mufti being flown for the UPA meeting in Delhi to ensure her vote in Parliament.”

“Clearly the government is pulling out all the stops to ensure the numbers. It also shows the duplicity of the PDP in all this.

“They will burst crackers along with the BJP to celebrate the fall of the Azad government here and then board secret flights to vote for the UPA in Delhi.”
