Chennai: P.V. Vaidyanathan (59), Special Correspondent (Retd.), The Hindu, passed away in New York on July 12 after a prolonged illness. He is survived by his wife, Renuka, a staff member of the Permanent Mission of India in the United Nations, and two sons. Vaidyanathan joined The Hindu in 1975 as a Sub-Editor in the Sports Department after a stint with Indian Express. Later, he moved to reporting, and rose to become a Special Correspondent. He reported mostly on cricket and table tennis. His important assignments for the paper included the Reliance World Cup (1987), the Asia Cup in Bangladesh (1988) and several first-class matches in India and abroad. He also covered the World table tennis championship in New Delhi (1987) and Dortmund (1989), the Commonwealth meet at Hyderabad, the Asian Games in New Delhi (1982). He was the compiler of the Indian Cricket Annual from 1988 till he opted for voluntary retirement in 2000. Vaidyanthan reported on all major sports in Chennai with a special focus on local league cricket. He was associated with the Tamil Nadu Sportswriters Association as Assistant Secretary. — Special Correspondent
