Training for youth in spices production

KOCHI: Spices Board, with an eye on “bridging the gap in current yield levels and the potential yield of crops,” is offering training to unemployed young people from farming families across India who will act as agricultural resource persons in quality spices production.

The training programme will be held at the Indian Cardamom Research Institute under the Spices Board at Myladumpara in Idukki district.

The training programme, with Good Agricultural Practices at it core, will train the selected young people in choosing good quality planting materials, integrated pest management, post-harvest handling, storage and processing, organic certification requirements and organic production, said a communication from the Spices Board here.

The training programme, centred around select major spices and herbs, is meant to “act as an alternative extension mechanism” and rooted in rural communities with self-reliance.

The training will cover the entire gamut of agricultural practices beginning with selection of quality planting materials. The medium of instruction will be English.

The duration of the training programme will be three months for each batch of 25 candidates. It is a residential programme.

Unemployed youths from agricultural families, including families of agricultural labourers with 10+2 Science or VHSC (Agriculture) or 10th pass from North Eastern States can join the programme. Preference will be given to candidates who are members of groups like Kudumbasree or any farmers’ groups. The age limit is 18 to 30 years (33 years for SC/ST candidates).

The trainees will be given a stipend of Rs. 1,500 each per month during the training period to meet travel, food and accommodation expenses. Candidates from the North Eastern States will be provided actual second class train fare from the place of their residence to Ernakulam.

The last date for submission of applications is July 25 and August 25 for candidates from North Eastern States.
