State defers licensing system

BHUBANESWAR: Bowing to the pressure from the agitating traders, the State Government on Tuesday deferred its decision to implement the licensing system for a period of three months.

The government took the decision after it failed to resolve the crisis.

The government decided that a high level committee would now look into the issues involved and appropriate steps would be taken on the basis of the report of the committee.

Traders had stopped importing essential commodities since July 10 leading to shortage of various food items in the markets across the State during the past few days.

They were up in arms against the government decision to implement the Orissa Foodstuff (licensing and control) Order, 2008 under which a wholesaler cannot possess more than 500 quintals of wheat, 300 quintals of edible oilseeds, 500 quintals of edible oil including refined oil, 500 quintals of pulses and 750 quintal of rice.

Moreover, the traders had to deposit certain fees under the trade license system.

Although a notification in this regard had come into effect from June 5 and the last date to apply for license was extended, no trader came had forward to seek a license till date.

The license system primarily was aimed at preventing hoarding of essential items to help people cope with the problem of price rise.
