Rs. 40 lakh allotted for improving roads

A total of 12 minor bridges will be constructed, says Minister

VIRUDHUNAGAR: The State Government has allotted Rs. 40 lakh for constructing a road over bridge in the town and improvement of roads in the district, the Minister for Highways, M.P. Swaminathan, has said. Reviewing the performance of his department during the last and the current fiscal, with the Ministers, K.K.S.S.R. Ramachandran, and Thangam Thennarasu and district officials, he said 12 minor bridges would be constructed and roads to the length of 330 km would be upgraded.

The Department along with the railways would construct a ROB on the Virudhunagar-Aruppukottai Ramamurthy Road across the Virudhunagar-Maniyachi railway track.

Rs. 25-crore for project

The State Government has allotted Rs. 25-crore for the project, which would be completed in 18 months.

Mr. Swaminathan said that except for 50 km of the 323 km of State highway, the rest had been made two-way in the last two years.

Majority of the works, including widening of roads and constructiong of 18 new bridges, taken up at a cost of Rs. 150 crore in the last two years had been completed.

The Highways Secretary, K. Alauddin, and the Collector, V. Chandrasekaran, were present.
