On his 106th birth anniversary in districts

REMEMBRANCE: All India Seva Dal chief organiser Mahindra Joshi garlanding the statue of Kamaraj at Virudhunagar on Tuesday.

VIRUDHUNAGAR: Political leaders, students, men and women queued up at the Kamaraj Illam here to pay respect to the former Chief Minister on the occasion of his 106th birth anniversary on Tuesday.

People who came in groups garlanded the statue at his house that has been converted into a memorial by the Government. People distributed sweets and pamphlets eulogising the late leaders’ unique leadership qualities.

Few khadi-clad Gandhians took an oath in front of his statue to follow the principles of Gandhi to foster peace. Some women spun yarn on charka in front of the house.

Youths from the All India Nadar Peravai brought a torch after going around the town. Among the firsts was the Collector, V. Chandrasekaran, to pay respect at the memorial. The Union Minister, G.K. Vasan, the Congress MP, N.S.V. Chitthan, MLAs, K.S.K. Rajendran, K. Jayakumar, party All India Seva Dal chief organiser Mahindra Joshi, State Seva Dal organiser, K. Selvaraj, former MLAs, S. Damodran, A. Rajagopal, K. Paralamalai, were among those who paid respect.

Leaders from Bharatiya Janata Party and Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam also visited the memorial.

The district administration celebrated the anniversary as Education Development Day. Ministers, K.K.S.S.R. Ramachandran, Thangam Thennarasu and M.P. Swaminathan, recalled the services of the former Chief Minister to the development of education. Meritorious students were honoured.

Ramanathapuram

The services rendered by Kamaraj to the development of education would always be remembered, said the Minister for Slum Clearance, S. Thangavelan here on Tuesday. The Minister said it was after he became the Chief Minister, the number of schools was raised to 36,000 from 16,000. Collector, R. Kirlosh Kumar, who presided over the function, said four panchayat union middle schools and two high schools were upgraded as high schools and higher secondary schools, respectively during the current year.

K. Hasan Ali, MLA, S. Jothi Jeyamala, Chief Educational Officer (in-charge), Selladurai Abdullah and Babu Abdullah of Syed Ammal Higher Secondary School and others participated.
