Probe ordered into firing during bandh

Indore: The district administration has ordered a magisterial probe into the police firing in the city’s Joona Rishala area during the bandh call given by VHP on July 3.

Two persons -- Rizwan Rehman (19) and Zeeshan (20) were killed on July 4, during the riots erupted following the bandh call.

The family members of those killed had alleged that they were killed in firing by three police constables. On the other hand, the police personnel said they resorted to firing in their self-defence in the wake of violent attitude of the rioters.

Later, bowing to the protesters’ demand, murder cases were filed against the three police constables.

Further, the District Magistrate Rakesh Srivastava said a magisterial enquiry has been ordered into the case which will submit its report within a month.

Altogether, eight persons were killed during the July 3-4 riots in the city in the wake of the bandh call.

Meanwhile, a three-member delegation of the National Commission for Minorities led by its chairman Mohammed Shafi Qureshi arrived here on a three-day visit today and would ascertain details of the violence.

Soon after its arrival, the NCM delegation visited the riot-hit Joona Rishala area and met the affected people. The delegation also met top officials of police and district administration to ascertain their views on the violence.

The delegation would also visit other affected areas to understand the views of the people and later discuss with the administration to provide compensation to the family members of those killed and injured. PTI
