NEW DELHI: With the recent spurt in street crime, particularly shooting incidents involving motorcycle gangs in recent days, creating a deep sense of insecurity among the Capital’s citizens, Delhi BJP president Harsh Vardhan on Tuesday wrote to Police Commissioner Y.S. Dadwal demanding that intelligence-gathering and picketing be improved to stop such incidents. Dr. Vardhan demanded that “organised criminal gangs should be finished” and a concrete strategy evolved to curb crime by calling a meeting of the police and the intelligence officers of Delhi and the National Capital Region. The opinion of the traders and the resident welfare associations should also be taken at such meetings, he suggested. The BJP leader said crimes over the past fortnight indicate that the criminals no longer fear the police which has failed to stop them in their tracks. “The bikers have committed nine heinous crimes and yet they are out of the reach of the police and are planning to commit new crimes,” he said. With these criminals targeting a number of traders, he said, the community at large is worried. Citing numerous instances where the police had refused to register FIRs on complaints to show the crime graph to be under control, he said such acts boost the morale of criminals and therefore need to be checked outright.
