VISAKHAPATNAM: Experts would make a technical study on creating storage points for the 24 tmc of water the district would receive through the Polavaram Left Canal, Collector Sanjay Kumar said here on Tuesday. As per schedule, the work on Polavaram Left Canal should be completed by 2011 and the water received through the canal would meet the domestic and industrial needs for the next 20 years. The GVMC, the Irrigation Department and several government and private agencies must prepare proposals on storing the water, Mr. Sanjay Kumar said at a meeting of the task force on utilisation of Polavaram water. Storage facilities needed large extents of land and since it was difficult to allot land, he suggested that industries and institutions like the steel plant, NPTC, Jindal, APIIC, etc. crated their own storage facilities, the Collector suggested. The GVMC and Irrigation Department had to find storage facilities in the city and rural areas respectively and take preliminary steps in this direction.
