Bijapur: A 23-year-old-man allegedly killed four members of a family and severely injured one with a sword at Hanchinal village in Sindagi taluk of Bijapur district on Sunday night.

Addressing presspersons here on Tuesday, Superintendent of Police Arun Chakravarthy identified the dead as Basappa Biradar (45), Basamma Biradar (35), Santosh (12) and Mahesh (7).

Savita (16), who was severely injured in the attack, has been admitted to district hospital.

Mr. Chakravarthy said that the accused, Rudrappa Hanumanthrai Naribol, was in love with Savita and had come to meet her near a farmhouse on Sunday afternoon.

Mr. Basappa, who was working in the farm, saw them and warned Rudrappa not to meet his daughter again, he said.

Rudrappa, who was angered by Mr. Basappa’s resistance, allegedly attacked the family members with a sword, Mr. Chakravarthy said.

Savita, who tried to stop Rudrappa, sustained severe injuries. The accused was arrested on Monday, he added.
