Week-long Jaatha against the proposed coastal corridor flagged off Srikakulam: Flagging off the week-long Jatha against the proposed coastal corridor, at the fishermen village Donkuru, about 130 km from here on Tuesday, State unit secretary of the CPI, K. Narayana charged the government with creating an ‘artificial tsunami’ by creating Special Economic Zones and proposing coastal corridor. These would result in destruction of green belt along the coast and would spell disaster for the people, specially fishermen and farm labourers along the coast. The Jatha was meant to create awareness among people about the harmful consequences of the proposed corridor. Similar Jatha started at Thada in Nellore district today. The Jathas would join at Vijayawada on July 21 when a meeting would be organised. Leaders from other Left parties as also the TDP have been invited to participate in the meeting at Vijayavada. Addressing meetings in the villages along the coast, Mr. Narayana said that the SEZs created a new set of landlords and the proposed coastal corridor would consolidate this. There were efforts to dilute the provisions of the Costal Regulatory Zone for the sake of coastal corridor. When a company had sought only some 500 acres of lands, the government was allotting 2000 acres. This allotment spree to a selected rich should stop. The CPI would wage a relentless battle against these actions, he said. Mr. Narayan said that his party had already started such struggle in Orissa. Mr. Narayan charged officials, especially Collectors with kowtowing to the dictates of politicians. N. Narayana, Chatrapur MLA from Orissa joined the Jatha and expressed solidarity.
